Because seed sources were once limited, our grand-parents and great-grandparents saved seeds. While we have many sources for seeds today, there are fewer and fewer companies selling seeds, and with genetic modification of seeds becoming more prevalent, we are losing access to many dependable vegetables. Some excellent varieties are being phased out, so saving seeds is our only recourse to retaining many old favorites. When you do shop for seeds, look for open-pollenated seeds or heirloom varieties from companies like Seed Savers Exchange, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Territorial Seed Company, Seeds of Change, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, and Botanical Interests.
